Tigers snap losing streak in Swift Current

-

Ryan Chyzowski and Mads Søgaard carried the Medicine Hat Tigers back into the win column on Saturday night at the Credit Union i-plex.

Chyzowski scored twice in the first period and Søgaard stopped all 48 shots he faced to snap a five-game losing streak with his first career shutout in a 2-0 victory over the struggling Swift Current Broncos.

Chyzowski put the Tigers in front midway through the first when he marched into the slot and beat Broncos goaltender Joel Hofer with a wrist shot through traffic. The Kamloops product struck again five minutes later after picking up a puck in the corner, cutting in on goal and snapping a shot through Hofer to give the Tigers some breathing room after 20 minutes.

Søgaard stymied the Broncos with 16 saves in the first period, then added 12 more in the middle frame to push Medicine Hat’s twogoal lead into the third.

Bryan Lockner nearly stretched the lead to three on a breakaway early in the third period, but Hofer turned him away with a pad save to keep the door open for Swift Current.

The Broncos managed to generate some sustained pressure in the final frame, but again they were unable to find a way past the 6-foot7 frame of Søgaard and settled for their fifth consecutive setback.

Hofer took the loss on 28 saves, dropping Swift Current to 3-18-1-1 on the season. Medicine Hat improved to 10-11-1-2 with the victory.

The Tigers return to the Canalta Centre to host the league-leading Prince Albert Raiders Friday at 7:30 p.m.
