Ringette teams fill up local rinks

-

Ringette teams from across the Prairies invaded the Gas City Friday for the Ed Horvath Interprovincial Classic.

Teams in 10 divisions will compete through Sunday at various rinks, and while winning is a goal, it isn’t the only thing on their minds.

“When this team was formed in September, most of these girls didn’t even know each other,” said Medicine Hat under-12 Madness coach Janelle Want in a submission to the News Friday. “Now they’re working as a team, the bigger girls are checking more aggressively and I’ve got to say I’m impressed by how well our smaller players are going after the ring, even against much larger opponents.”

“We really are getting better all the time — the girls feel it, too, and it shows in their play and their attitude. This team can’t wait for tomorrow.”

This after a pair of onesided losses, first to Northwest Calgary Rampage (7-0) and then to the Airdrie Attitude.

As for Medicine Hat’s other teams, Friday was a mixed bag. Among the early results in under-10, the Ice Angels beat Airdrie 7-0, then tied the Ice Wolves 2-2. The Eliminators fell 6-3 to Airdrie, then beat Bow View 8-1.

In under-12 A — the Madness play in under-12 B — the Surge fell 7-5 to Bowview. In under-14 A, Charge fell 9-2 to Northwest Calgary and 8-1 to Northwest Ignite. The Hat Fusion fell 8-4 to South Calgary in under-14 B, while the Hat under-16 A team beat NorthWest RMBL 74. In under-16 B, Aftershock dropped a 5-3 decision to Bowview, while in under-19 A the Wild beat Regina 5-1. Medicine Hat’s open team, Smash, beat Force 6-3.

Games continue through to Sunday’s finals in all but the first tier under-10 division, which winds up Saturday.
