Tigers take in nearly 2,000 stuffed animals at Teddy Bear Toss
Nearly 2,000 teddy bears and more than 1,000 winter apparel items hit the playing surface at Saturday’s Medicine Hat News Teddy Bear Toss during the Medicine Hat Tigers’ matchup against the Lethbridge Hurricanes at the Canalta Centre.
Tigers captain James Hamblin netted the coveted Teddy Bear Toss goal roughly 15 minutes into the opening frame to send the bears flying.
A total of 1,990 stuffed animals and 1,080 items such as toques and gloves were collected at the event and will be split between the Medicine Hat Health Foundation, the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter and the Salvation Army.
Members of the Tigers will be at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital to hand out stuffed animals to patients this Monday.
Raiders stay on top
The Prince Albert Raiders had a 19-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the struggling Swift Current Broncos on Tuesday night, but it didn’t stop them from hanging onto the No. 1 spot in the CHL for an eighth straight week with a 26-1-0-1 record.
The Ontario Hockey League’s Ottawa 67s managed to climb from third to second thanks to a 22-3-3-1 record, but they were unable to unseat the long-standing leaders. The US Division-leading Everett Silvertips held onto their spot at No. 6 with a 22-7-1-0 record, while the BC Divisionleading Vancouver Giants climbed three spots to No. 7 at 206-2-0.
The East Division’s Moose Jaw Warriors were also listed as an honourable mention.
Canada invites seven from WHL
A class of seven WHL players from six different teams earned invitations to Hockey Canada’ IIHF World Junior Championship selection camp.
WHL leading scorer Brett Leason and top goaltender Ian Scott — both members of the CHL-best Prince Albert Raiders — lead the class of Dub players. Spokane Chiefs centre Jaret Anderson-Dolan and defenceman Ty Smith, Moose Jaw Warriors defenceman Josh Brook, Lethbridge Hurricanes blueliner Calen Addison and Portland Winterhawks centre Cody Glass were also invited to compete for a spot on Canada’s roster.
