Soccer teams rack ‘em up

-

It’s been a month of medals for Medicine Hat’s young indoor soccer players.

Between a pair of tournaments in Lethbridge, Rattlers Academy Soccer Club squads have combined for seven top-three placings, though obviously winning isn’t the only thing they’ve been doing well at.

“As coaches, our goals for the players were to work their hardest, communicate with each other, stay together as a team when adversity came, and, if possible, implement in a game environment the concepts we have been practicing,” said under-13 Tier 2 boys coach Jason McLester in a press release. “We saw growth in each and every one of our players, which was very exciting.”

McLester’s side took second in the Dec. 7-9 Boys December Cup in Lethbridge, one of five teams to reach the podium that weekend.

Both the under-17 and under-11 Tier 2 boys Rattlers won their respective divisions, while the under-15 Tier 2 boys were second and an under-15 Tier 3 side earned bronze.

There were other teams who didn’t get a medal, but their coaches seem confident it’s just a matter of time before the scoreboard matches what they’re seeing in practice.

“The bounces did not go our way; nevertheless, the boys did not give up,” said under-13 Tier 3 boys coach Mark Elson in the press release. “The improvement from the first to the last game was significant. If the boys can continue this growth, the results will quickly follow.”

As for the girls teams, they were part of the Stephanie Gruca Memorial Tournament in late November. The under13 Rattlers won silver while the under-15’s took bronze in their respective divisions.

“Highlights of the tournament were the improved progression of each game and the positive attitudes throughout games,” wrote under-13 RASC girls coach Cameron McCarty.

The indoor season runs through March.
