The NDP on Saturday will declare Peter Mueller the candidate for the CypressMedicine Hat riding at Medicine Hat College in room F1009 at 2 p.m.

Mueller was the only contestant for the nomination.

He says he had been hoping for a contest but has used the time to do considerable research.

“I do know the issues. I think I’m well prepared to support the NDP position on most issues including the carbon tax and so on,” said Mueller. “(I’m) fully prepared to say that the other side is simply putting out misinformation and so we’ll have to confront that.”

He hopes there will be plenty of opportunities for debate during the election campaign.

Without any false hopes Mueller says he is committed to making the best possible case for Rachel Notley’s government during the campaign.

“I really am committed to four more years of Rachel Notley’s government,” said Mueller.

There are several things that will likely be the main campaign issues, including the carbon tax, pipelines and the energy industry and diversification into other areas, says Mueller. “It is really heart warming to see the activity that’s going on right now, the various announcements, and the money — the billions of dollars coming for diversification and so on,” said Mueller. “I think there is hope that there will be movement on the pipeline issue. Everyone ... wants that pipeline to open.”

Mueller says he is convinced Jason Kenney, leader of the UCP, cannot do better than the NDP when it comes to getting approval for pipelines.

“It would be even harder for him because of his longstanding animosity toward the prime minister,” said Mueller.

In the past month, since announcing his decision to stand as a contestant, Mueller has been busy putting a team together and making plans to open a campaign office, which will take place later this month.

He has ordered campaign signs, flyers and there are plans for a telephone campaign to solicit support.

Mueller is a former teacher who recently worked at the Medicine Hat Public Library, from which he has taken a leave of absence.
