Third COVID-19 death in Saskatchewan
Province reports nine new
cases for 193 in total
REGINA
Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Health says a third person in the province has died from COVID-19.
It said the resident was in their 80s and died from virus-related complications.
Earlier this week the province announced that two residents in their 70s died over the weekend because of the virus.
The government reported nine new cases of the virus on Wednesday bringing the total to 193, including five staff at a Saskatoon jail.
“At this point we have no reason to believe these cases were spread within the correctional facility, although we are working with public health to confirm this,” a Ministry of Justice spokesman said in a statement.
“Currently, no inmates have tested positive for COVID-19.”
The government said 24 of the overall cases are linked to a snowmobile rally held last month where 110 people attended.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Premier Scott Moe said he plans to give away his pay raise and asked other provincial politicians to follow suit.
Moe said that all legislature members and cabinet ministers are to receive a 1.7 per cent cost-of-living increase.
The compensation formula is laid out by the legislature’s board of internal economy.
NDP Opposition Leader Ryan Meili also said that he plans to give his raise away.
“With so many people hurting right now, it doesn’t seem right to be getting a raise,” he said on Twitter.
