“Movie: Arab Blues”

Filmmaker Manele Labidi Manele Labbé made her feature film directorial debut with this 2019 comedy that captures the rapid social changes in Tunisian society in the wake of 2012’s Arab Spring uprising. Golshifteh Farahani stars as an expatriate who has decided to return to her hometown of Tunis to open her own psychotherapy practice. The cavalcade of “colorful” patients she attracts soon gives her pause, however.

“Movie: Just Mercy”

Jamie Foxx stars in this fact-based 2019 legal drama as Walter McMillian, a Black prison inmate on Death Row for the 1986 murder of Ronda Morrison, a white woman. McMillian’s case catches the attention of idealistic young Harvard law graduate Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan), who has teamed up with a kindred spirit (Brie Larson) to found the Equal Justice Initiative.

“Movie: White Lie”

“The Oxbow Cure” and “Spice It Up” collaborators Yonah Lewis and Calvin Thomas again team up to write and direct this 2019 drama about a collegian (Kacey Rohl, “The Magicians,” “Arrow”) who goes to extraordinary lengths to maintain the ruse of a faked cancer diagnosis. Amber Anderson, Martin Donovan and Thomas Olajide also star.

“Movie: The Way Back”

Gavin O’Connor’s inspirational 2020 sports drama stars Ben Affleck as an alcoholic construction worker who gets a chance at redemption when he is recruited to become head basketball coach at his former high school. Al Madrigal plays a supportive faculty colleague of Affleck’s character, with Janina Gavankar and Michaela Watkins as his wife and sister respectively. Glynn Turman and Todd Stashwick co-star.
