A local physician has been sanctioned by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta for unprofessional conduct.

A press release from CAPSA says Dr. Adriaan Kriel, a family physician with an interest in cosmetic procedures and who owns Skin Technologies in Medicine Hat, admitted to unprofessional conduct and was sanctioned by a CPSA hearing tribunal.

“He is suspended until Aug. 10, 2021 from practising any type of medicine,” said a spokesperson for CPSA.

Kriel was accused of displaying a lack of skill and judgment in his medical practice after performing a cosmetic blepharoplasty (eyelid revision surgery) and liposuction on two patients, according to CPSA. Both patients experienced complications and Kriel failed to treat them appropriately.

The News was unable to reach Kriel on Tuesday for comment.

The CPSA press release says the procedures in question were performed over a number of years in unaccredited, non-hospital surgical facilities, which is not permitted under the Health Professions Act.

Kriel told CPSA that he had ceased performing blepharoplasties and any surgical procedures requiring sedation, but this was not the case, says CPSA.

According to CPSA Kriel admitted to the allegations and made a joint submission with CPSA regarding the sanctions. The college says the hearing tribunal accepted Kriel’s admission of unprofessional conduct and ordered the agreed-upon sanctions as follows:

Kriel is suspended from medical practice for 12 months, to be served in full.

His practice permit was suspended Aug. 10. He must sign a written undertaking with CPSA, confirming he will not perform any procedure that must be provided in an accredited facility.

Kriel is also responsible for the full costs of the investigation and hearing for a total of $19,252.30.
