Live by the way of genuine love
We live in a time marked by division, where our differences (or the differences of others) are a prime identity marker.
That this is so should not surprise us, if that great ancient sage was right who said that unity, being one, is evidence of the work of the Divine. And, trying to imagine this type of unity in our world today, we can only agree — it would be a miracle.
I am writing in the context of the American presidential election and its reminder (coupled with the events leading up to the election) of the deep divides in our neighbour to the south.
I am also writing out of the context of the prayer and promise of Jesus as he looks down history towards our own time.
His prayer is that the community of His followers would be one.
His promise is that this type of unity would be an undeniable proof of the truth and work of God in Jesus and in His followers.
Please don’t get bogged down in all the “religious” stuff; I mention it only to reflect on what Jesus indicates will create this oneness: a share in God’s love and glory. These both amount to the same thing — setting aside one’s own rights and interests so that one can work for the rights, interests and wellbeing of others.
That selflessness promotes peace and unity and that selfishness leads to the opposite is so obvious that it scarcely warrants mention. But, at the risk of egregious oversimplification, let me do so anyways. Whether it is COVID protocols, political affiliation, race, gender, etc, an exclusive focus on me and mine will always lead to greater barriers to communication, understanding, and positive change.
If, however, one can “lay down one’s life” for the other, the path is open to reversing the trends that lead to division, conflict and alienation of others.
Living by the way of genuine Love is the prescription for a brighter future for our community, country and world.
