Sharks down sluggish Leafs to stay perfect

Jonathan Dahlen scored the winner and Adin Hill made 30 saves as the San Jose Sharks stayed perfect on the young season by defeating the uninspired Toronto Maple Leafs 5-3 on Friday night.

Logan Couture added two goals and an assist, while Timo Meier, with a goal and an assist each, and Erik Karlsson provided the rest of the offence for San Jose (4-0-0).

Jason Spezza, Ondrej Kase and John Tavares replied for Toronto (2-2-1).

Michael Hutchinson stopped 26 shots for the Leafs, who have scored just 11 times in five games to open the schedule.

Auston Matthews, who returned from off-season wrist surgery in Monday’s thrilling 2-1 overtime loss to the New York Rangers, is without a point through two outings.

While the home side had three days off between games, the Sharks played for the third time in four nights, including Thursday’s 2-1 victory against the Ottawa Senators.

Friday’s puck drop was scheduled for 4 p.m. with the Leafs set to embark on their first trip to the U.S. since March 2020 right after the game ahead of Saturday’s tilt in Pittsburgh against the Penguins.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Charlie Coyle had a goal and two assists, Linus Ullmark made 34 saves against his former team and Boston beat Buffalo.

Taylor Hall added a goal and an assist, and Brad Marchand tallied two assists as the Bruins rebounded from a 6-3 loss Wednesday in Philadelph­ia to salvage a split on its first road trip of the season. David Pastrnak and Thomas Nosek also scored for Boston.

STARS 3, KINGS 2 (OT)

DALLAS — Denis Gurianov scored on a rushing backhander with 4:15 into overtime to give Dallas a win in their home opener over Los Angeles.

Braden Holtby kept Dallas in the game by stopping 43 shots. Of the Stars’ three wins, two were in overtime and one in a shootout.

Kopitar scored his sixth goal in the season’s first four games and Gabriel Valardi scored on a five-minute major penalty.
