Lions Club hosting three more barbecues at Rattlesnake following early success

The Medicine Hat Community View Lions Club is gearing up for its next three barbecues of the summer out at Rattlesnake Lake in Golden Sheaf Park. The first one will be Saturday, followed by one two weeks later on Aug. 20 and a final one on Sept. 4.

“We had a fantastic response to our July 16 barbecue from the Rattlesnake community and also folks from Medicine Hat and area,” said Nancy Crowley of the Lions Club. “The new square payment system that allows us to take debit and visa payments was very well received by our customers.”

Lion Day occurs Aug. 10, which has a dual purpose. The first is to appreciate the large cats we share the planet with and support efforts to protect them and their habitat. The day is also to appreciate all the brothers and sisters who are in service as Lions.

Lions Club International is the governing body for Lions Clubs and its mission is, “To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian need, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions Clubs.”

Aug. 10 will also see the Community View Lions Club assisting with the Meals on Wheels program at the Veiner Centre. Not only will members be assembling the meals that day, but they will also be paying for them.

Members of the club volunteer at Top Hat Bingo and the next one is coming up on Aug. 13. Crowley says it is a great environment and the members have lots of fun.

The club recently provided a Legacy Scholarship to a deserving college student, with the Lions of Alberta Foundation providing $500 and

Community View matching the amount for a total of $1,000.

New members are always welcome. Focus areas of the club are Vision, Youth, Disaster Relief, Humanitarian, Diabetes, Hunger, Environment and Childhood Cancer.

“It is a very rewarding experience to be a member of a charity organization working together and giving back to our community both financially and as volunteers,” stated Crowley. “One of our mantras is ‘Kindness Matters’.”

The barbecue will be at the Lakeview Site in Golden Sheaf Park, near the dock and playground by the lake. Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, fries, poutine, soft drinks and bottled water will be available.

Barbecues will be from noon to 6 p.m., dates are Aug. 6, Aug. 20 and Sept. 4. Check out the Community View
