Police seek interested residents to apply for citizens academy
The Medicine Hat Police Service is accepting applications from individuals interested in joining an outreach program to learn more about the service.
Through a series of lectures and hands-on learning demonstrations, the Citizens Police Academy provides participants the opportunity to gain an understanding of daily operations of policing, and increase awareness on community safety concerns.
The course runs weekly on Wednesday evenings at the Medicine Hat Police Service community boardroom for eight consecutive weeks. Each course will run approximately three hours and is limited to a maximum of 20 participants.
Presentations will cover topics including speciality teams, major crimes investigations, community safety initiatives as well as victim services, firearm and control tactics and canine demonstrations.
Applications must be at least 18 years old and successfully pass a security clearance check.
“We encourage participants who have an interest in police related issues or work alongside police to apply, including community leaders, police family members, members of the media and those interested in a career in law enforcement or future police volunteer opportunities,” reads a statement provided by Sgt. Carissa Witkowski.
Police say the intention of the academy is not to train people to be a police officer but is offered for those interested in learning more about police as a possible profession.
The academy will conclude with an official graduation ceremony and participants who have successfully completed the program will be presented with a participation certificate.
