Mayor to get weekly TV talk show this fall

He’ll answer the public’s questions

-

Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre is about to get his own television show.

Coderre confirmed Wednesday he will appear in 26 episodes of “J’ai une question, Monsieur le maire” (I have a question, Mr. Mayor) that will be broadcast weekly on the French-language news station LCN, starting Oct. 3.

Coderre will take questions from the public submitted through social media from residents of Montreal and other areas of Quebec, as well as journalists from LCN.

He will not know the questions in advance, but he may be advised of the themes to be broached.

He said he is currently speaking to English-language media to look into holding an anglophone version of the show “in the interest of balance.”

In a statement given to Quebecor-owned Journal de Montréal, which also owns LCN, Coderre said he had always believed in “the importance for elected officials to maintain a direct link with the populace. By multiplying the channels of communication, you encourage citizen participation in the public sphere, which invigorates our democratic life.” The show will allow members of the public to talk about the issues that worry them and play a role in making decisions, Coderre said.

Coderre will not be paid for his appearances. The 30-minute show will be hosted by a news anchor who has yet to be named.
