Kanye West serves the community by serving himself

- DOUG CAMILLI tellcamilli@gmail.com

In March, Kanye West got away with just community service for beating up a paparazzo in an incident last July, remember? But if you had visions of Kanye cleaning toilets someplace, or ladling out stew in a homeless shelter, you obviously don’t know about the Important Persons Act.

TMZ.com revealed the other day that West’s actual “community service” consists of giving speeches to fashion students about his own fashion opinions and experiences. Ego-tripping, I believe, is the technical term.

Most recently, he did this at someplace called the Los Angeles Trade Technical College.

The N.Y. Daily News notes that last November, speaking to students at Harvard, West actually said this: “I really do believe that the world can be saved through design.” Meaning, you know, his design.

He’s 37.

Back in the 1960s, Clairol hair dye had an ad campaign: “Is it true blondes have more fun? Why not be a blond and see?” But now, Maggie

Gyllenhaal says don’t bother. She tried it, and wasn’t impressed.

“I dyed my hair blond because I wanted to feel better about myself,” she told the Independent, a British paper.

“I do like it blond, but it doesn’t make you happy. The truth is, it was a long, hard winter, and I thought, maybe this will change my life. But it never does. I should know that by now, I’m 36 years old.”

You’ve been warned.

It’s a boy for Simon Helberg — Howard on The Big Bang Theory — and his wife, Jocelyn Towne. The lad, named Wilder, is their second kid; daughter Adeline is 2.

Meanwhile, CBS said The Big Bang Theory’s season première will be Monday, Sept. 22.

The George Clooney/Amal Alamuddin wedding reports are starting to feel believable.

Us Weekly says temporary bylaws now protect George’s waterfront villa in Laglio, a town of about 1,000 people on Italy’s Lake Como.

Mayor Roberto Pozzi told the mag he hasn’t heard anything official about a wedding yet, but confirms that there’s a new $750 fine for any driver who stops outside Clooney’s place, Villa Oleandra, any time, day or night, until Sept. 30.

Swimming or boating to within 1,000 metres of Clooney’s waterfront costs you the same amount.

Life continues to be good for my old favourite, Jimmy Buffett. He and his wife, Jane, already have homes in Palm Beach, Fla., the Hamptons on Long Island and St. Barts in the Caribbean, and now they’ve added a little place in Beverly Hills.

Well, not that little: they paid $8.25 million U.S., says Variety. Four bedrooms, five bathrooms, the usual.
