FIVE PHASES OF NEW PLAN TO MOVE SYRIAN REFUGEES TO CANADA
1
IDENTIFY
Refugees will be resettled under two programs, Government-Assisted Refugees (GAR), previously registered with the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), and Privately Sponsored Refugees (PSR). Canada is looking at Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan. Interested refugees will go to a UNHCR office and be identified by an iris scanner.
2
PROCESS
Immigration process will be completed overseas and 500 officials, including temporary visa officers, are being deployed. Interviews with refugees will be scheduled with experienced visa officers. A medical exam will be conducted. Security screening will include fingerprinting and digital photos checked against immigration, law enforcement and security databases.
3
TRANSPORT
Transportation will be largely by privately chartered aircraft with military aircraft assisting if necessary.
4
WELCOME
Privately sponsored refugees will go direct to their communities. Government refugees will be matched with communities where there are facilities in place or put up at temporary accommodation. The government is working to expand existing refugee receiving centres and identify new destination communities.
5
SETTLE
Refugees will be settled across Canada and will get support such as health care, clothing, basic household needs and staples, food and shelter. Support can last up to one year.
