5 PLAYERS TO WATCH

The Alouettes and Roughriders both have 1-3 records, although the visitors are coming off a victory, while Montreal has lost three consecutive games and is winless in two contests on its home field. Herb Zurkowsky has the lowdown on Friday’s possible game

MITCHELL GALE

Now in his fourth CFL season, Gale is expected to make his second career start at quarterback for the injured Darian Durant. And the first wasn’t half bad, Gale completing 21 of 36 passes for 354 yards and a touchdown last week, as Saskatchewan handed Ottawa its first defeat of the year. Gale is largely considered a pocket passer, but he possesses some mobility and will come into the game well prepared.

JUSTIN CAPICCIOTTI

Signed as a free agent from the Redblacks — one of numerous changes new GM and head coach Chris Jones made to overhaul the roster — the defensive-end finally produced last week, recording two quarterback sacks and four defensive tackles. Capicciotti put pressure on the quarterback all game, his final sack sealing Saskatchewan’s victory. He was third in the league last season, with 12 sacks.

NAAMAN ROOSEVELT

The Riders wide-receiver has already produced three 100-yard games this season and appears to have developed some chemistry with Gale. He caught eight passes for 182 yards against Ottawa, scoring once, and already has 30 receptions for 477 yards. Roosevelt’s on pace to produce 2,146 yards, which would obliterate the team record of 1,715 set by Joey Walters over 16 games in 1981. Released last season following training camp, Roosevelt returned to the practice roster and eventually was activated. He’s considered fast and has big-play ability.

DURON CARTER

The Als’ tall wide-receiver remains one of the team’s few offensive threats and one of a precious few with the ability to stretch a defence. Carter caught a 45-yard pass against Toronto on the Als’ second series on Monday, eventually leading to a Brandon Rutley touchdown. And Carter’s 61-yard pass-and-run touchdown early in the second half provided the Als with a glimmer of hope. He caught six passes for 124 yards against the Argos, leading all receivers.

KEVIN GLENN

The veteran quarterback returned following a one-game hiatus last Monday and was deadly accurate, completing 24 of 28 passes for 285 yards and one touchdown. But it was a critical interception he threw in the third quarter, deep in Toronto territory, that killed the Als’ hopes of a comeback victory.
