What’s next for the tadpoles?

-

Re: “Study finds pot improves night vision — in tadpoles” (Montreal Gazette, Aug. 26) It is not always easy to foresee the practical use of research findings, but, in this case, I think it is obvious. As you are probably aware, tadpoles are not permitted to apply for driver’s licences in the province of Quebec (as well as a number of other jurisdictions).

One of the many reasons given for this outdated prohibition is that they do not have adequate night vision. Well, the solution is now apparent.

We simply need to encourage any tadpole applying for his (or her) driver’s licence to consume a sufficiently large quantity of marijuana before taking the test. This will improve his or her night vision sufficiently that he or should be able to pass that component of the driving test.

I suggest a bill be introduced in the National Assembly amending the Highway Safety Code to allow tadpoles who are high on marijuana to apply for driver’s licences. They certainly wouldn’t make worse drivers than the majority of drivers licensed in Quebec. Edward Katz, M.D., Côte-St-Luc
