Free-floating grower brings plants to LYFE

-

Growing plants indoors can be an art as well as a science. For one trending home decor item, though, science definitely is bringing these plants to, dare we say, life. Or, more appropriately, LYFE. Created by Swedish art scientist Simon Morris, LYFE is a zero-gravity growing system that can cultivate one’s favourite type of foliage as its levitates in the air. According to Elle Decor, the rotating planter hovers over an oak base. A magnet placed at the vase’s bottom pushes against an electromagnetic base, making the plant twirl in mid-air.

The product’s Kickstarter campaign notes that the rotation especially benefits air plants (also known as Tillandsia) “as nutrients are absorbed by their leaves through the air, rather than the conventional root system. The geodesic form reflects several different shades of light as it gracefully rotates, creating a mesmerizing effect.”

There’s also a hidden reservoir that can collect any extra water you might use (or overuse) on it.

The good news? After receiving just over 1,200 backers and roughly US$328,000 in pledges, Morris and his Swedish firm, Flyte, were successful in their Kickstarter fundraising. The company will be selling LYFE online at flyte.se.

The planter sells for US$199, with separately sold air plants costing just US$15 each. Shipping has been slated for September.
