A broken arm but no doctor!
Health Minister Gaétan Barrette told the Journal de Montréal that Quebec already has too many doctors and he wants to reduce the number of admissions to Quebec universities’ faculties of medicine.
I invite him to take a tour of the system and see how short-staffed our hospitals really are.
When my daughter broke her arm last week, we went to the Charles-Lemoyne Hospital in Longueuil, where we were told that there was no orthopedic specialist on duty and we had to return the following morning to get her arm looked after.
I was appalled that a hospital only had someone available to set a broken limb between 8 a.m. and noon.
Broken bones are not limited to office hours!
This necessitated a trip into Montreal to the Montreal Children’s Hospital, where, after a four-hour wait, her arm was assessed and put in a cast in a warm and professional manner. The experience has made it clear that we need more doctors and specialists, not fewer, especially in areas outside Montreal. Audrey Seddon, Brossard
