Four wines from Quebec

- BILL ZACHARKIW

Versant Rouge 2015, Coteau Rougemont, Quebec red, $14.80, SAQ # 12204086: While I have never been a big believer in Quebec reds, this does the job. Very floral, with crunchy red fruit, and a good acidity on the finish. Keep-it-cool-and-pack-it-back-style of red. Grape variety: frontenac, marquette. Serve at: 15C. Residual sugar: 1.7 g/l. Drink now. Food pairing suggestion: Aperitif, pâté and terrines, beef stews. L’Orpailleur Blanc 2015, Seyval/ Vidal, Vignoble de l’Orpailleur, Quebec white, $15.80, SAQ # 704221: Lemony-fresh, mineral notes and green apples. Gets richer in the mid-palate and finishes with a note of creamy lime. Not complicated; simply very good. Grape variety: seyval, vidal. Residual sugar: 5.6 g/l. Serve at: 8C. Drink now. Food pairing suggestion: Aperitif, ceviche, light fish with lemon and herbs. Cuvée Charlotte 2015, Domaine Les Brome, Quebec white, $16.45, SAQ # 11106661: Pretty wine that shows both flowers and exotic fruit, without becoming too perfumed. Fresh, dry and easy drinking. Grape variety: seyval, Geisenheim. Serve at: 8C. Residual sugar: 2.4 g/l. Drink now. Food pairing suggestion: Aperitif, cold seafood. Vidal 2015, Réserve, Coteau Rougemont, Quebec white, $23.20, SAQ # 12862951: Normally used for ice wine, the vidal grape can make excellent dry wines. Shows some oak and spice notes alongside orchard fruits; texture is rich, with a lengthy finish. Pretty elegant stuff. Grape variety: vidal. Residual sugar: 1.6 g/l. Serve at: 8-10C. Drink now-2019. Food pairing suggestion: Grilled scallop, salmon with tamari and ginger.
