A group of airport employees came to work on their day off last weekend to complete a project dear to their heart.

The employees, who are responsible for installing signs and posters at Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, came up with a novel way of supporting their beloved Montreal Canadiens this playoff season.

They persuaded their bosses to allow them to install the Canadiens colours and team logo on the large “Montreal” sign that hangs outside the terminal building.

The employees mentioned the idea to their boss last week and they quickly received approval from the airport’s new president and CEO Philippe Rainville.

“We found out about it and we thought it was a great suggestion,” said Stéphanie Lepage, a spokesperson for the Aéroports de Montréal.

They are all excited about the Habs being in the playoffs and they want to showcase it to the world. It is all part of the spirit of the playoffs.

Airport officials contacted the Canadiens to make sure they supported the idea and both parties reached an agreement on the display. Lépage wouldn’t provide any details of the agreement saying it’s confidential. “It was all done very quickly,” she said.

On Saturday, the employees got to work on transforming the sign. The employees are happy with their initiative but didn’t want to speak to the media about their idea, Lepage said.

In a news release, Rainville said he was proud of “this delightful employee initiative.”

“It looks like the Cup is on its way!” he said.

Airport officials have received great feedback from passengers and have had many positive comments on social media, including more than 2,600 likes on its Facebook page.

“It’s a great way to celebrate the Stanley Cup playoffs,” Lepage said.

Donald Beauchamp, the Canadiens’ vice-president of communications, called the initiative “great citizenship.” He said the team was happy to give airport officials permission to use the logo and team colours at the airport.

“They are all excited about the Habs being in the playoffs and they want to showcase it to the world,” he said. “We were very happy. It is all part of the spirit of the playoffs in Montreal.”
