Sabres GM Murray stands behind Bylsma

Taking full responsibi­lity for his team’s disappoint­ing season, Buffalo Sabres general manager Tim Murray placed the emphasis on him demanding more from head coach Dan Bylsma and the coach demanding more from players. Speaking three days after Buffalo closed the season, Murray backed Bylsma to keep his job for a third season. Murray said the Sabres’ locker-room needs “fixing” for the team to begin contending for a playoff spot after extending its franchise-record post-season drought to six years.

Manfred pressuring Indians to dump logo

Baseball commission­er Rob Manfred has made his strongest comments yet on wanting the Cleveland Indians to eradicate their Chief Wahoo logo. Manfred has been in talks with Indians owner Paul Dolan about abolishing the divisive symbol. MLB spokesman Pat Courtney said on Wednesday that Manfred wants to transition away from the logo. In the past, Manfred has only gone as far as saying he understood why people find the logo offensive. Protesters gathered outside Progressiv­e Field on Tuesday to demonstrat­e against the team’s usage of the red-faced, smiling logo.

Blue Jays’ early season tailspin continues

Chase Anderson gave up three hits in seven innings as the Milwaukee Brewers blanked Toronto 2-0 Wednesday, handing the Blue Jays their seventh loss in eight games this season. Milwaukee centre-fielder Keon Broxton’s RBI double in the second accounted for the only run through five innings until Jonathan Villar sent a 90.2-m.p.h. Marcus Stroman cutter 417 feet over the right-centre fence for a solo homer. Toronto (1-7) lost its fifth straight.
