Earth Day celebratio­ns planned across West Island

Park cleanup, children’s puppet show, art workshop among activities on tap

The city of Pointe-Claire is holding a slew of public activities in celebratio­n of Earth Day, a twoday event set for April 21 and 22.

On Friday, April 21, at 7 p.m., a puppet show will be presented at the Stewart Hall Cultural Centre for children aged 5 to 12. Free tickets are available at Stewart Hall.

But the main event will be a free distributi­on of 575 trees on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the public works yard, located at 50 Terra-Cotta Ave.

A total of 12 different species (one tree per household) and 100 barrels for collecting rainwater, compost, wood chips and cones for the recovery of organic matter will be handed out.

The Multi card is required as proof of residence.

Rainwater collection barrels will also be on sale at a reduced price ($40) after the first 100 have been distribute­d.

At 9 a.m. on Saturday a “cleaning bee” will be held in Terra-Cotta Park in co-operation with the Guides and Scouts.

The park cleanup will be followed by a public planting of 250 trees at 11 a.m. The public is asked to bring along a shovel, a reusable water bottle and work gloves. The public is asked to meet at the park entrance on Terra-Cotta Ave. near the public works yard.

The public is also invited to attend an art workshop Saturday at 1 p.m. will be invited to contribute to the creation of a collective mural on the theme of water with artist Emmanuelle Jacques.

At 1:30 p.m. (in English) and 3:30 p.m. (in French), a storytelli­ng activity about water will be held at the Library-Valois Branch. The activity is free for members and registrati­on is required at the library.

“The Earth Day activities are intended to make everyone aware of the importance of protecting our planet, for the benefit of both current and future generation­s,” said Mayor Morris Trudeau.

Elsewhere, Baie-d’Urfé citizens are invited to reserve a tree provided by the town on Saturday, April 22. The town will provide 250 free trees on a first-come, firstserve­d basis. Residents can show up at Red Barn on Lakeshore Road, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to reserve a tree. There is a choice of 10 different trees, but a limit of one tree per address. Home delivery will take place the week of May 15.

Other activities planned for Earth Day in Baie-d’Urfé include discussion on various environmen­tal subjects.

From 9 a.m. till 1 p.m., Environmen­tal Booths for Le Nichoir, GUEPE, Morgan Arboretum and the Fritz Farm Youth Gardening Program will be open to the public.

From 9:30 a.m. till 10 a.m., an Urban Wildlife Conference will be presented in English by Scott Pemberton from the Morgan Arboretum of McGill University.

Other conference­s on bees and other Earth Day topics will take place at the Red Barn until 1 p.m.

In Dorval, Earth Day activities will include a conference on climate change and overconsum­ption on April 22, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., at the Sarto-Desnoyers Community Centre, Salon C, located at 1335 Lakeshore Drive in Dorval.

Patrick de Bellefeuil­le, a weatherman at MétéoMédia, will present the free conference.
