MAKING AN IMPACT

MLS side aims to build momentum

Mauro Biello might be sleeping better these days. But the Impact head coach realizes, should his team become the Philadelphia Union’s first victim this Major League Soccer season, he might have to turn to sleeping pills.

When the team returned to training Tuesday, following just its first win of the campaign against Atlanta on Saturday, Biello’s initial message to his players was not to take the Union lightly.

“We need to go with an urgency and a playoff mentality. That’s the only way,” Biello stressed. “There’s no time to breathe. It’s time to keep going forward, with that strong mentality.”

The Impact, second-last in the Eastern Conference with a 1-2-3 record, meet the Union Saturday afternoon (1 p.m., TVA Sports, TSN Radio 690) at Talen Energy Stadium in suburban Chester, Penn.

Philadelphia is last overall, the only MLS team yet to record a victory in six games (0-4-2). The Union has scored only five goals while surrendering 11 and is 0-21 at home. Philadelphia, riding a four-game losing streak, hasn’t won in 14 games since a 2-0 victory over Kansas City on Aug. 27. Since then, Philadelphia has 10 losses and four draws, an ignominious streak of futility.

“It’s hard to call them the worst team in MLS,” said Impact right fullback Chris Duvall. “They’ve come against some tough results but, more importantly, we need to focus on stringing together a couple of games in a row and a couple of good performances. Hopefully, we can build some momentum.

“We know we’re going to get a tough team and a desperate team — one that’s ready for a fight. Teams have to get their first win some time, but we don’t want it to be against us.”

While the mood around the Impact undoubtedly has improved this week, the team still had to fight to the end against an expansion Atlanta United side, at home, one that was reduced to 10 men for the entire second half. And it took a goal from Anthony JacksonHamel in injury time to push Montreal over the top.

“We know in this business, when you win, it’s always better. The sun’s shining a little better today,” Biello said. “At the same time, we know the realities of the league and the difficulties we face every week. It’s back to finding solutions to making the team better and putting us in a situation to collect points.

“We know there’s so much parity in this league. Every game’s difficult. Every game has its new challenge. (Philadelphia) is a team that hasn’t found success at home in three games, but we’re expecting a difficult challenge. There’s a sense of urgency for sure on their end to get that first win. We have to be ready for that.”

While the Impact will see the return of midfielder Marco Donadel from a controversial red-card and one-game suspension incurred against the L.A. Galaxy, it will be missing centre back Victor Cabrera, who suffered an ankle injury against Atlanta.

While the Impact has yet to record a clean sheet, the offence was lifted by the return from injury of Ignacio Piatti, who missed two games with hip and groin maladies. And Ballou Jean-Yves Tabla continues to impress Biello and his staff.

The 18-year-old, who made two consecutive starts in Piatti’s absence, came off the bench in the 62nd minute against Atlanta, almost immediately altering the game’s tempo.

“Right away, there was a momentum swing in our favour,” Biello said. “We didn’t finish, but it gave everyone a bit of confidence that we’re going to pin these guys back and go for that goal. We got it late, but you saw the type of energy Ballou brought in his play.”
