Wrong place to say sorry
Re: “Coiteux’s error is an opportunity for learning (Opinion, April 27) Municipal Affairs Minister Martin Coiteux missed the opportunity to offer a genuine apology for his English language faux pas.
He should have delivered his mea culpa in the National Assembly where his original transgression occurred.
Rising on a point of personal consideration — protected by parliamentary privilege, with his comments becoming part of the official record of proceedings — would have made his so-called apology meaningful.
Hunkering down in a hallway surrounded by microphones, television lights and aggressive reporters is not the location to right a linguistic wrong. His place was to stand in the house and address his apology to the whole of Quebec via the sacrosanctity of the parliamentary structure.
Frankly, his apology means little as offered.
