PEOPLEWATCHING
Annie Hall helped popularize the pastime of people-watching, as Alvy (Allen) and Annie (Keaton) make comments on passersby. Here are some people to watch out for (look quickly!):
Jeff Goldblum: He’s the party guest on the phone who says “I forgot my mantra.”
Marshall McLuhan: Waiting in line in front of a man loudly pontificating about media theory and Marshall McLuhan, Alvy pulls the noted Canadian intellectual over to shut the guy down. (McLuhan was not Allen’s first choice. Federico Fellini and Luis Buñuel declined the cameo.)
Shelly Hack: She’s the preppy Alvy stops on the street to ask why she seems so happy. Her answer: “Uh, I’m very shallow and empty and I have no ideas and nothing interesting to say.” Her boyfriend says, “And I’m exactly the same way.”
Christopher Walken: He’s Duane, who tells Alvy his dark fantasy of driving into oncoming headlights. Truman Capote: The guy Alvy calls “the winner of the Truman Capote look-alike contest” is, in fact, the real Truman Capote.
Sigourney Weaver: Her screen debut, in a non-speaking part as Alvy’s movie date near the end of the movie.
