1. Jewish General Hospital

It started as a small community hospital in 1934 after waves of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe and Russia faced discrimina­tion when seeking medical care — and jobs in medicine. Now, the Jewish General is a teaching hospital and a member of the Integrated Health and Social Services University Network. The hospital is a renowned provider of health care, especially in the fields of cancer, epidemiolo­gy, and psychosoci­al aspects of health and disease.

2. Jean-Brillant Market

A fruit and vegetable kiosk that’s open 24 hours a day from March to November — weather permitting — the Jean-Brillant Market is also a popular place to get Christmas trees in the winter. Other products available include a variety of plants and flowers, as well as sweet treats like honey and maple syrup.

3. Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery

The largest cemetery in Canada, NotreDame-des-Neiges, like the adjacent Mount Royal Cemetery, is a National Historic Site of Canada that was founded over 160 years ago, and is a reflection of the city’s past and present. An interestin­g ecosystem in itself with a full array of plants and animals, NotreDame-des-Neiges boasts a unique mix of monuments and nature. It’s a popular spot for nature and history lovers alike.

4. Victoria Avenue

Victoria Avenue is where you’ll find Nelson Mandela Park and the Montreal Kosher Bakery, as well as a variety of Indian, Sri Lankan, Filipino and Vietnamese restaurant­s. The avenue, which runs north-south and was named after Queen Victoria, starts in Westmount and ends just north of Jean-Talon Street, near the Montreal SPCA.

Founded in 1977, Project Genesis is a notfor-profit community organizati­on dedicated to helping people from all walks of life with problems relating to housing, welfare, and family allowances.

6. Caribbean Curry House

Establishe­d in 1980, the Caribbean Curry House is widely regarded as the best place in town to get an authentic, mouth-watering roti. For those not already in the know, roti is a kind of flatbread made of atta flour, filled with anything from beans and vegetables to meat, fish and seafood. And of course, plenty of spices.
