Bad day for Filip Peliwo at Granby Challenger
One of the goals of the $100,000 National Bank Granby Challenger is to give Canadian tennis players a chance to climb in the rankings.
The homegrown talent had mixed results as the rain-delayed event got underway Tuesday.
It wasn’t a good day for Filip Peliwo, the No. 1 junior in the world in 2012. The Vancouver native was confident after winning six ITF Futures titles this year, but lost to Colombian Alejandro Gonzalez 7-5, 6-3.
“I didn’t play a smart match,” said Peliwo.
“I got mad at things that happened on the court. I’ve played a lot of tennis over the past seven weeks, reaching a lot of finals, and I was mentally and physically tired.”
Peter Polansky, the No. 2 seed from Toronto, squeaked past Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls 7-6, 7-6.
Montrealer Samuel Monette, a 23-year-old Indiana University grad, was leading Alexander Sarkissian 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 when the American retired with an injury.
Torontonian Brayden Schnur, who turned pro last year after an All-American career at North Carolina, moved closer to a spot in the top 200 in the ATP Tour rankings with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Yusuke Takahashi of Japan. Yasutaka Uchiyama of Japan, the No. 8 seed, beat Philip Bester of North Vancouver 6-4, 6-4.
In the companion $50,000 ITF women’s event, top-seeded Bianca Andreescu, a 17-year-old from Mississauga, beat Australian Kimberly Birrell 6-3, 6-2 and Katherine Sebov of Toronto beat Mai Minokoshi of Japan 6-4, 6-4. Carol Zhao, a Stanford grad from Richmond Hill, Ont., lost to Australian Tammi Patterson 6-4, 6-3.
Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the Rogers Cup with a wrist injury that could also keep him out of the U.S. Open.
Vancouver’s Vasek Pospisil was a three-set winner over American Bjorn Fratangelo in the BB&T Atlanta Open.
