The Hudson Legion is unveiling its renovated war memorial this Sunday at 1 p.m.

Branch 115 of the Royal Canadian Legion — the Hudson Legion — will be rededicated during the ceremony and the location of the cenotaph will be renamed Place Vimy in honour of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

The four-day Battle of Vimy Ridge launched in the wee hours of April 9, 1917. The toll on Canadian soldiers was devastating, with 3,598 killed and 7,004 wounded.

The Battle of Vimy Ridge is considered to be a defining moment in Canadian history — both for the country and its military.

Place Vimy will also honour Hudson-area soldiers who served in other major conflicts as well as in peacekeeping missions.

Three bronze plaques will be unveiled honouring Canadian soldiers who served during the Cold War or in peacekeeping missions or saw action in Korea, the Boer War, Bosnia and Afghanistan.

A reception will be held at the legion hall following the ceremony.

Legionnaires, veterans and serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces who plan to attend the ceremony are asked to wear their uniforms and medals.

The renovated cenotaph is located at 56 Beach St. near the intersection of Main Rd. and Royalview St.
