Film explores theory of jerks

-

The Nova Scotia government has announced funding of almost $237,000 for a profanely titled documentary about jerks.

The movie, by Halifax’s John Walker Productions, is about how people around the world become jerks and the frustration they cause others.

It’s based in part on a New York Times bestseller by University of California-Irvine philosophy professor Aaron James.

Both the movie and book are entitled Assholes: A Theory.

A synopsis provided by John Walker Productions calls it “an intellectually provocative and existentially necessary film.”

“John Walker explores James’ theories and recommendations using clips sourced from Hollywood and news archives, combined with vox pop and ruminations with key observers.”

Nova Scotia Business Inc. announced funding Tuesday of $236,911, based on an eligible Nova Scotia expenditure of $816,935 through the Nova Scotia Film and Television Production Incentive Fund.

The money goes to such costs as labour, goods or services purchased from a Nova Scotia-based supplier. The fund replaced the province’s lucrative film tax credit, which had been credited for a thriving film and TV production industry.

Ann Bernier of John Walker Productions said they are currently in the process of completing financing.
