Let Dollard mayoral race begin: 2 challenge incumbent
Janiszewski said that council is committed to ensure ‘the town is well run and we would like to continue to do so.’
So far, there is a trio of candidates running for mayor in Dollard-desOrmeaux, though potential candidates have until Oct. 6 to file their nomination papers for the Nov. 5 municipal election.
On Monday, Mayor Ed Janiszewski confirmed he is seeking reelection. He was first elected as a councillor in 1978 and then for his first term as mayor in 1984. He said he wanted to run again because “I still have ideas.” One priority for Janiszewski is to see De Salaberry Blvd. extended to connect with the proposed REM light-rail network of stations. He said public transit must be encouraged.
In a prepared statement, he said that city council is committed to making sure “the town is well run and we would like to continue to do so.” He moved to Dollard-desOrmeaux with his wife Sylvia in 1964. They have four daughters.
Raman Chopra will also be running for mayor in Dollard. Chopra is a real estate broker for Remax Invest. He has been a major contributor to the establishment of the Hindu Mandir temple and community centre, and said one of the reasons he is seeking election is to celebrate diversity in Dollard.
Chopra said he would work hard to bring more jobs to Dollard and push for free access to Wi-Fi throughout its territory. He would also like to see a tax reduction for small businesses and new businesses. He and his wife Shama have lived in Dollard-desOrmeaux for 27 years. They raised two boys and are now grandparents.
Coun. Alex Bottausci (District 7) announced his candidacy for mayor back in February. The 47-yearold father of three has been a Dollard councillor for 12 years during which time he has served on various committees including Public Works, Finance, Environment and Recreation. Bottausci is the program coordinator for the Institute of Cooperative Education.
