Djermane’s sister to be charged with obstructing justice
One of Sabrine Djermane’s sisters has been issued a summons alleging she obstructed justice.
A copy of the summons was recently made public at the Montreal courthouse. Djermane, 21, is on trial for terror-related offences, along with El Mahdi Jamali, 20.
Rania Djermane, Sabrine’s younger sister, is alleged to have “voluntarily attempted to obstruct, deceive or thwart the course of justice, by declaring that she lied during prior statements.” She makes her first court appearance Nov. 8.
The summons does not make specific reference to the jury trial underway in Montreal. But according to court records, the alleged offence occurred on May 14, 2016, while Djermane and Jamali’s preliminary inquiry was underway.
Djermane and Jamali, who were a couple when they were arrested in April 2015, are charged with attempting to leave Canada with the goal of committing a crime in another country. They are alleged to have made plans to travel to Syria to join ISIL in May 2015. They are also charged with being in possession of an explosive substance, facilitating a terrorist activity, and committing a criminal act for the benefit or under the direction of a terrorist group by having an explosive substance under their control.
Rania Djermane has not been called as a witness in the trial.
