Abuse victim dreams of a brighter future

- KELSEY LITWIN

It has been almost a year since Yuping left her partner.

He was abusive and controlled her finances, leaving her with little independence.

“I was with him for seven years,” the 31-year-old said. “I never knew (another life) existed.”

Yuping said she has since obtained full custody of their two sons, ages five and six. While living in a shelter, she has been able to take French classes. The help and support she has received has made a world of difference, she said.

“I feel very fortunate,” she said.

A social worker helped the family through the last year by providing psychological counselling and instilling confidence in the boys. Through the ups and downs, “I try to do my best for them,” Yuping said. “The three of us form a unique family. We have a lot of love for each other.”

Right now, Yuping relies on welfare. Once her French classes are finished, she hopes to learn carpentry and explore a career in the field, which she is passionate about.

“I’ll be able to really, fully support my children and give them the best life I can,” she said.

Yuping is one of the many people who will receive a $125 cheque from the Montreal Gazette Christmas fund this year. She said it will help her buy Christmas gifts for her kids.

Yuping is also determined to help other women who are in situations similar to the one she found herself in.

“There’s so much to do. My life was paused for seven years … and now it’s like a leap!”
