1 The matchup: Here we are in February and the Canadiens and Flyers are finally getting together for the first of their three games. The Flyers moved into the first wild-card position in the Eastern Conference on Tuesday with a 2-1 overtime win over the Hurricanes in Carolina. The victory gave the Flyers 59 points, nine points better than the 14thplace Habs. That means this is a must-win game if Montreal is holding out any hope of a playoff spot. The Canadiens are riding a modest twogame winning streak and have a 4-5-1 record in the last 10 games, while the Flyers are 5-4-1. 2 Power play is clicking: The Canadiens scored three power-play goals in their 5-2 win over Anaheim on Saturday and added two more in Sunday’s 4-1 win over Ottawa. Jeff Petry scored three of those goals and has matched his career high with eight goals. While the Canadiens miss Shea Weber’s shot from the point, the power-play units have been forced to be more creative in his absence, and the result is that the Canadiens are looking for more options rather than relying on the big blast from the blue-line. Since Weber was shut down in December, Montreal has the second-best power play in the NHL and is No. 7 on the season. 3 Price needs support on road: This hasn’t been a vintage season for goaltender Carey Price, who hasn’t won a road game since the Canadiens beat the Flames in Calgary on Dec. 22. He’s started six road games since then and has been on the losing end each time. But it should be noted those games have two things in common. First, Price has given the Canadiens a chance to win. Over the six losses, he’s posted a save percentage of .928, which should have been good enough to win. The problem is that the Canadiens scored a total of four goals in those games. 4 No substitute for the Ritz: If you watched the news clips of the celebrations (riots) following the Eagles’ win over the Patriots in the Super Bowl, you saw the canopy over the entrance to the Ritz-Carlton collapse under the weight of a horde of revellers. The Habs usually stay at the upscale hotel when they visit Philadelphia, but it’s on the route of the Eagles’ victory parade Thursday and, with traffic expected to be a mess in downtown Philly, the Canadiens cancelled their morning skate and moved to a hotel near the airport. Suffice it to say, it’s not the Ritz. 5 The other guys: Jakub Voracek has already surpassed last season’s total with 62 points, including a league-leading 52 assists. He’s fourth in the NHL scoring race and has four goals and 22 points in 22 career games against Montreal. Claude Giroux is next with 43 points, including 15 goals, while Sean Couturier is among the top goal-scorers in the league with 27. Other double-digit goal scorers for the Flyers are Wayne Simmonds (18), Travis Konecny (11) and Valtteri Filppula (10). Brian Elliott has had the lion’s share of the work in goal. He sports a career record of 6-3-1 against the Habs.
