Sounding off on those sirens

-

As the mother of a newborn baby, my anxiety skyrockets the moment I see those snow removal signs go up — because I know it will be another night of no sleep.

The lack of disrespect on the part of towing companies is appalling. Their sirens are so loud they can wake you from several blocks away.

All winter they have been blaring at all hours of the night, from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. I don’t understand how they can be allowed to disrupt the peace like that.

I called the city of Montreal and was told, initially, the sirens should not be going off after 9 p.m. The next day another person from the city called to say that sirens may be used until 11 p.m. Well, I’ve heard the sirens go off after 11 p.m. many times. And what baby or child goes to bed at 11 p.m., anyway?

Besides, those orange signs warn residents not to park.

If they want to take the risk and leave their cars where they’re not supposed to, that’s their choice.

Why not just tow the vehicles instead of ruining everyone else’s night?

You don’t need to be the mother of a newborn to know how hard it is to fall asleep after you’ve been woken up in the middle of the night.

Sleep and peace are precious; they should not be taken away from us in this way. Winter is hard enough as it is.

Why make it harder? Vanessa Costanzo, St-Léonard
