Guatemalan woman’s deportation postponed
The deportation of Lucy Francineth Granados, an undocumented Guatemalan woman who has been living in Quebec for years, has been postponed.
Granados was hospitalized on Monday because she was under a lot of stress and lost consciousness, said Viviana Medina of the Immigrant Workers Centre, which handled her case with immigration authorities.
Due to her health and hospitalization, Granados’s deportation was postponed but not cancelled, Medina said. It was first scheduled for Tuesday.
Citing Granados’s privacy, the Canada Border Services Agency, which is responsible for the deportation procedures, refused to provide details on the case.
Medina said Granados was brought from a detention centre in Laval to the agency’s offices to prepare her deportation. “That’s where she fainted and was brought to a hospital,” Medina said.
According to Medina, Granados’s health deteriorated while detained since last Tuesday.
A solidarity rally will take place at the same time Wednesday morning, outside Montreal’s Guy-Favreau Complex.
According to information from Solidarity Across Borders, Granados arrived in Quebec in 2009 after her husband died. She said she wanted to stay in Canada to better support her three children and because her life would be threatened in Guatemala. Her refugee claim was denied. An application for permanent residence for humanitarian reasons was filed last year and is still being processed.
