SUNDAY NIGHT IMPROV

(Théâtre Sainte-Catherine, 264 Ste-Catherine St. E.). This weekly show is the longest-running improv event in Montreal and features newcomers and vets competing to survive the night, with the audience providing the clapo-meter. A French version plays every Monday night.

FILMS IN FOCUS

(April 28, Montreal Improv, 3697 and 3713 St-Laurent Blvd.) A monthly treat from Goddamn Bear, starring Jason Grimmer and Andy Assaf as film critics who introduce made-up “film clips” (the audience suggests the titles) performed by a team of improvisers. Watch out for the same company’s fantastically funny Precinct: An Improvised Cop Comedy, which returns May 24 and 25, also at Montreal Improv.

KIRSTEN, GET SOME FRIENDS

(May 11, Montreal Improv). Improv queen Kirsten Rasmussen was one of the founders of Montreal Improv. Now based in Toronto, she returns here regularly (she was one of the players in the Kevin McDonald show mentioned in this feature), especially for the Montreal Sketchfest, during which she won the Just for Laughs award last year.

FRINGE ALL-STAR IMPROV JAM

(June 11, Montreal Improv). This year the Montreal Fringe festival is forgoing its usual open-air improv faceoff, Theatricus Olympicus, and replacing it with this midnight feast of a fundraiser, featuring touring Fringe artists and local improv veterans.

BLIND DATE

We’re jumping the gun a bit here, as this one doesn’t arrive until April 2019 at Centaur Theatre. Created by Rebecca Northan, it begins with a clown who has been stood up for a date. What’s she to do? Why, grab somebody from the audience, of course, for an evening of unpredictable fun. There will also be French and queer nights on selected dates.
