‘TOYOBARU’ CARS TO BE UPDATED

-

Toyota and Subaru are rumoured to have resumed working together on an updated version of their 86 and BRZ sports cars, to be fitted with more powerful engines.

One of the most common complaints about the “Toyobaru” twins is their lack of motivation, and that’s something the automakers will apparently rectify with a new 2.4-litre engine, if you can believe the unnamed sources cited by the Japan Times. The 86 and BRZ — scheduled for a 2021 debut, the newspaper says — may borrow that engine from Subaru’s Ascent and offer the Toyota-designed chassis a lower centre of gravity and improved stability.

While Toyota is taking the lead, Subaru isn’t sitting idly by. The Japan Times sources say it plans to outfit the new BRZ with its suite of active safety assists. A new 86 and BRZ make sense for both companies.
