The Montreal Alouettes kicked off a three-day spring training camp on Monday in Vero Beach, Fla.

The mini-camp marks the first opportunity for the club’s new head coach, Mike Sherman, to see his players work out on the field. Sherman, a former Green Bay Packers head coach, was hired on Dec. 20 to turn around a team that finished 3-15 in 2017 and missed the playoffs.

Almost 30 players, mainly from the offence and including quarterbacks Josh Freeman, Matthew Shiltz and Drew Willy, are expected at the camp, which will conclude on Wednesday with a morning practice.

The club announced Monday it has added 13 players for camp: defensive backs Willy Dorcin, Tyquwan Glass, Justin Gibbons, Daniel Gray, Jeremy Jackson, Jermaine Robinson, Ross Madison, Terrence Bailey and Drico Johnson, linebacker Gionni Paul, receiver Thomas Mayo and running backs Jakhari Gore and Daryl Virgies.

The Alouettes’ main pre-season training camp is slated for May 20 to June 9 at Olympic Stadium, on the indoor and outdoor football fields. General manager Kavis Reed, along with Sherman and his assistant coaches, will evaluate close to 90 players. All practices during training camp will be open to the public and free of charge.

The Alouettes will play their first pre-season game on May 31 in Ottawa against the Redblacks.
