McGill’s championship baseball team fetes slugger Lagarde
The powerhouse McGill University baseball team had a strong West Island connection this past season.
Sasha Lagarde of Pierrefonds was recently named the most valuable player of the nationalchampion McGill Redmen at the team’s annual awards gala.
Lagarde helped McGill capture its fourth consecutive national baseball crown.
He won Tournament MVP honours after leading McGill to the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association banner last fall.
The six-foot, 220-pound outfielder was also named the tournament’s top hitter and made the CCBA tourney all-star team.
In 20 games, Lagarde scored 28 runs, collected 23 RBIs and hit an amazing .456. Lagarde, a sophomore, is majoring in teaching English as a second language.
The McGill baseball team also presented graduating outfielder Andre Lagarde — the twin brother of Sasha — with a framed game jersey. He was a second-year transfer from Concordia University who completed a certificate in management.
Another West Islander, Kirkland’s Jonathan Duforest, a physical education sophomore, won the team’s Silver Slugger Award, presented to its most outstanding hitter. The McGill squad, guided by head coach and field manager Jason Starr, posted a best-ever 36-5-1 record overall, including a perfect 16-0 regular-season mark in the CCBA.
