Dorval on alert for elusive street sign bandit

- JOHN MEAGHER jmeagher@postmedia.com

Dorval crime stoppers are on the look out for the brazen bandits who are stealing the city’s street signs.

The city posted the petty crime on its website, alerting the public to be on alert if they see anything suspicious, like someone climbing a street pole with a wrench.

The city’s general manager Robert Bourbeau told the West Island Gazette that eight signs have been stolen so far.

The thefts have taken place mostly on the northern part of the city, he said.

Asked if it looks to be the work of teen vandals, Bourbeau said, “I doubt that it would be a teen prank.”

A more likely scenario, he added, is that someone is reselling the metal to a scrap dealer. One clue that pros are involved is that the signs are carefully removed using tools.

Bourbeau said he can’t recall this ever happening in Dorval before. “(I’ve) been here 37 years; (and it’s the) first time I hear of this.”

The city is taking the matter seriously.

“I have advised (our) Public Security people as well as our local Police Station (Station 5) to be on the lookout,” Bourbeau said.

The city is seeking help from its citizens in order to catch the thief or thieves.

If anyone spots someone trying to remove a street sign or any other suspicious activity related to this issue, they are asked to contact Dorval Public Safety at 514-6334046.
