Cyclist, 16, seriously injured in collision in Rosemont

- KELSEY LITWIN

A 16-year-old cyclist is suffering from a serious head injury after colliding with car in Rosemont— La Petite-Patrie Monday afternoon.

Montreal police said they received a call about the collision at 16th Ave. and St-Joseph Blvd. E. around 12:30 p.m. Witnesses told police the cyclist was travelling south on 16th Ave. and possibly failed to make a mandatory stop before she collided with the car, which was travelling eastbound on St-Joseph.

Police could not confirm whether the cyclist was wearing a helmet at the time, saying that it will be one of the questions that investigators will work to answer.

The cyclist and the driver, a 59-year-old woman, were both transported to a hospital. The driver was treated for shock.

This is the third collision between a vehicle and cyclist in the Rosemont borough this summer. In June, a cyclist was killed by a dump truck on St-Zotique St. and 19th Ave., while another suffered a serious, but not life-threatening head injury after a collision with an SUV on St-Joseph Blvd. E. and Molson St.

A spokesperson for the Rosemont borough said they will be analyzing the incident “to see if measures can be put in place to prevent such a situation from happening again.”

Last year, 693 bike accidents resulting in at least minor injuries were reported to the Montreal police.

While that number is down from the two years before (745 in 2016 and 763 in 2015), it is slightly more than the 654 accidents reported in 2014.

Montreal police were unable to say how many bike accidents have occurred so far in Montreal in 2018.
