Would you rather get a tooth extracted than organize your home? How about train for a marathon? According to a recent survey from MasterBrand Cabinets, more than half of respondents would prefer to put sneakers to pavement than set their house in order.

The company asked more than 1,000 homeowners aged 25 to 65 questions related to organization, finding that 42 per cent of millennials consider it to be “a hobby ” compared to 33 per cent of the general population.

Other discoveries were more specific to what should go where: cups should be stored facing down (60 per cent of respondents), instead of facing up (41 per cent); pots belong in the cabinet (83 per cent), not hanging up (18 per cent); and knives should go in a butcher block (58 per cent), rather than in a drawer (42 per cent).

As for the small cabinet most have above the fridge? More than one in seven homeowners use it to hide their guilty-pleasure snacks.

If you can muster the wherewithal to organize your home, the survey found, you’ll likely be rewarded with peace of mind: 95 per cent of respondents feel that when their home is organized that their life is organized, and 81 per cent say they can’t relax if their kitchen is a mess.

“After years of observing and studying how families cook, clean, work and entertain in their spaces, this research confirms that organization is a never-ending, but very worthy, pursuit for many homeowners,” said Stephanie Pierce, director of design and trends at MasterBrand Cabinets.
