Subban on video game cover
P.K. Subban said he has one big goal in his career and that, of course, is winning the Stanley Cup.
The defenceman has come close, reaching the Eastern Conference final twice with the Canadiens and then helping the Nashville Predators to the 2017 final where they lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games.
In the meantime, Subban is collecting honours like the Norris Trophy, multiple All- Star Game appearances and, most recently, a spot on the cover of EA Sports’ best-selling video game, NHL 19, which goes on sale Sept. 14.
“There’s one more big accomplishment I want in my career, but to be on the cover is symbolic of the hard work you put in, starting when you’re a little kid,” Subban said during his recent visit to Montreal.
“It’s a huge honour. There are so many great players who have been on the cover already and there are so many players who could be on the cover,” said Subban. “(There are) guys coming off great years last year and guys who have had great careers. There are guys who are going to be Hall of Famers who haven’t been on the cover and it’s a big deal.”
Subban said he’s not a big video game player, but he did play NHL when he was young.
‘PINCH MYSELF’
“The first one I played had Jarome Iginla on the cover,” said Subban. “I think that was 2003 and to think I’m in that position now and so many kids are going to play that game, it’s really cool. I have friends that don’t watch hockey, they’re maybe celebrities in music or whatever and they say ‘that’s awesome you’re on the cover.’
“Sometimes, I pinch myself, I can’t believe it,” said Subban. “Maybe next year, when I’m not on the cover, it’ll sink in a little more.”
EA Sports has reached an agreement with the NHL Alumni Association to include 200 former players so gamers can have Wayne Gretzky play on a line with Oilers star Connor McDavid as they try to score on pre-mask Canadiens goalie Jacques Plante.
