City reduces speed limit along Lakeshore Dr.

Motorists will have to slow down along Lakeshore Dr. in Dorval from now on.

The city reduced the speed limit to 30 kilometres per hour (km/h) in order to standardize the maximum speed all along the road.

Dorval Mayor Edgar Rouleau said the move will also hopefully make the road safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

“It’s more of a safety thing because people drive fast, they don’t (obey) stop signs,” he said. “By reducing the limit for security reasons, it should help. And the police will be able to enforce the speed limit. Because for us on the Lakeshore, at one time we had 30, 40 and 50 kilometres per hour, from Lachine to Pointe-Claire.”

Rouleau said speed limits along Lakeshore Dr. used to be a patchwork of varying speeds.

“So you’d have two streets at 30 km/h because there was a park, then you’d have 40, then for whatever you’d have 50,” Rouleau said.

Rouleau said the patchwork of speed limits also made it tougher for police to hand out speeding tickets. “The 30 km/ h speed limit was near schools and parks. So the police did not give any tickets because it wasn’t fair to the drivers, because from one street to next, it was 30 or 40 km/ h.”

However, not all streets in Dorval will have a 30 km/ h speed limit.

Rouleau said Cardinal Ave., which runs parallel to the rail tracks and Highway 20, will have a 40 km/ h speed limit.

“It will be 40 on Cardinal (which becomes Donegani Ave. in PointeClaire) because Pointe-Claire’s part is 40 also. So we’ll be uniform along Cardinal and Donegani avenues,” he said. “But a lot of streets in Dorval will become 30. It will be 30 km/ h everywhere except where it says 40 km/ h.”

The new 30 km/h speed limit along Lakeshore Dr. came into effect Sept. 27.
