Montreal Alouettes running-back William Stanback, Edmonton quarterback Mike Reilly and Eskimos running-back CJ Gable were named the CFL’s top performers for the final week of the 2018 regular season on Tuesday. Stanback had 31 rushing yards on six carries and 103 receiving yards on five receptions as Montreal defeated Hamilton 30-28 on Saturday. Montreal ended the season with back-to-back wins, a silver lining in a campaign that saw them finish 5-13 and miss the playoffs for a fourth consecutive year. Stanback, 24, a six-foot, 233-pound native of Hempstead, N.Y., finished the season with 539 yards rushing on 81 carries along with 25 receptions for 313 yards and two touchdowns. Reilly passed for 320 yards and a touchdown and Gable ran in two touchdowns in Edmonton’s 33-24 season-ending win over Winnipeg on Saturday. Edmonton finished the season 9-9, but missed the playoffs and a chance to compete for the Grey Cup at Commonwealth Stadium. Also on Tuesday, Alouettes long-snapper Martin Bédard was nominated for the CFL’s Jake Gaudaur Veterans’ Award, which goes to a Canadian player who best demonstrates the attributes of Canada’s veterans: strength, perseverance, courage, comradeship and contribution to Canadian communities. Bédard, who regained his position after sustaining season-ending injuries in 2013 and 2016, is an ambassador for the Alouettes’ Together At School program, encouraging Quebec youth to stay in school. He’s also regularly visits Manoir Marc Perron, where he helps elderly and handicapped residents.
