The John Abbott College football program has a feather in its cap after former Islanders quarterback Adam Sinagra was named the 2018 winner of the Hec Crighton Trophy as the most outstanding player in U Sports football. Sinagra, who starred for the University of Calgary Dinos, was honoured at the Vanier Cup awards gala Thursday in Quebec City. The Pointe-Claire native joined the Dinos after playing CEGEP football for the John Abbott Islanders from 2013-15. He set a new U Sports record this season with 3,233 passing yards while leading the Dinos to an 8-0 regular season. Sinagra ranked second in Canada in passing touchdowns with 23, and led the conference with a passer rating of 126. It marks the first time an alumnus from John Abbott College has taken home the highest honour in Canadian university football. John Abbott Islanders head coach Patrick Gregory lavished praise on Sinagra. “We are all very proud of Adam’s accomplishments,” Gregory said. “He was a game changer for us, a tremendous competitor who made everyone around him better.” Stan Gendron, Sinagra’s quarterback coach at Abbott, called his former pivot “an exceptional competitor.” “It is no surprise, that Adam was also named all-Canadian.” Sinagra played his minor football in Châteauguay. Another West Islander was also honoured at the U Sports football gala, Concordia’s Peter Regimbald, a Pointe-Claire resident, was awarded the Gino Fracas Award as the volunteer assistant coach of the year.
