Revived Jets set for 6-0 Patriots

- JOHN KRYK jokryk@postmedia.com

Hey, no one figured the then-winless New York Jets had a chance last week at home against the Dallas Cowboys.

Then the Jets thumped America’s team 24-22, in a game that really wasn’t that close.

So do the Jets have a real chance to beat the undefeated New England Patriots tonight?

“I’m sure they’ll be juiced up, coming off a big win last weekend, and then (a) division (game) with us coming to town,” Patriots safety Devin McCourty said.

“I don’t remember the last time we went there and had an easy game. It’s always a battle of trying to stay on top, even if we get ahead. I don’t know if that was last year or two years ago there and we end up down 14-zip by the end of the first quarter, so it’s never easy going there. They know us well, we know them well. It’s just going to be a battle down there, and we don’t expect anything different Monday night.”

The Patriots are 6-0, the last undefeated team in the AFC and one of only two left in the NFL, with San Francisco (6-0). The Jets are 1-4.

While starting quarterback Sam Darnold was off for a month, battling mononucleosis, the Jets quickly had to turn to third-string QB Luke Falk after Darnold’s top backup coming out of training camp, Trevor Siemian, suffered a serious ankle injury not even two full quarters into his first start in Week 2.

Falk was dreadful. The Jets didn’t have a chance in those three games.

When Darnold was ready to return last weekend against Dallas, the Jets made the rare move of releasing Falk less than a week after he started a game. David Fales now backs up Darnold.

McCourty said game tape shows Darnold has made improvements in Year 2, after New York drafted him No. 3 overall last year.

“I think he’s just the guy,” said McCourty, who led the NFL entering Week 7 with four interceptions in this, his 10th year in the league.

“The comfort level he has, the guys around him (and) he’s taken all those snaps since May.

“And then obviously he’s a really good player … He looked great last week, in just knowing what he wanted to do, getting the ball down the field. So, we’ve just got to be aware it’s going to be different from just that aspect of the first time we played them, we really had their third quarterback in there.”

Indeed, this is the second time these teams have played in five weeks.

New England smashed the Falk-piloted Jets 30-14 in Week 3.

“You have to stay out of the mentality, especially this one since we just played them a couple weeks ago, of it could kind of feel repetitive like, ‘Man, I already did this, I already watched this,’ ” said McCourty.

“You’ve got to make sure you avoid that and keep going over everything, because when you’ve played a team before, like everything that didn’t work for them, they’re not going to do again.”
