Boost for artists, caregivers, pediatric research

- ALBERT KRAMBERGER

The Stewart Hall Art Gallery in Pointe-claire is hosting an online exhibition showcasing the works of some 40 contemporary Indigenous artists. The Contemporary Native Art Biennial takes place online until June 21.

Introduced in 2012 by the Art Mûr gallery, the Contemporary Native Art Biennial turns Montréal/tiohtià:ke into a place of convergence of native artists for two months. This year, under the curation of David Garneau (Métis), assisted by rudi aker (Wolastoqiyik) and Faye Mullen (Anishinaabe), the Stewart Hall Art Gallery will virtually host the works of artists Warren Cariou, Kay Mayer, Dylan Miner, Margaret Orr, Máret Ánne Sara, Rainer Wittenborn and Claus Biegert.

Depending on how the COVID -19 crisis evolves and if government distancing directives allow for it, the Stewart Hall Art Gallery may open the exhibition at its premises before the end of the event on June 21.

“We need to continuously support each other during this crisis, and we applaud those who are doing their utmost to provide healthcare support. Artitalia Group Inc. will continue to do its part and we are available to help during these trying times,” stated company president Tony Vardaro.

EMERGENCY CAMPAIGN TO FUND PEDIATRIC RESEARCH

The Foundation of Stars is holding a fundraising campaign through May 15 specifically dedicated to pediatric research on COVID-19 and infectious diseases. The aim is to raise $100,000 to fund urgent research projects on

COVID-19 for the mother-child axis.

This Quebec network brings together about 20 researchers from the CHU Sherbrooke, CHU Sainte-justine, MUHC, CHU Laval, Maisonneuve-rosemont Hospital and Jewish General Hospital. These teams will also work in collaboration with an already established Canadian registry as well as an international network.

QUEBEC ART ACQUISITION

The Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art will devote its total acquisition budget for 2020 to the purchase of works by artists living and working in Quebec, to send a positive message during the COVID -19 crisis.

The MAC and its foundation have set a goal of raising $300,000 and the MAC has increased its acquisition budget by $50,000.

“The MAC is an essential part of the Quebec visual arts community. As such, we must act to support our community by being attentive to what is happening while respecting our mission and mandate,” stated John Zeppetelli, MAC’S director and chief curator. “By enhancing the museum’s acquisition budget, we want to underline the importance of the work of Quebec contemporary artists and their collaborators, and to help raise their spirits and give them hope,” he added.

The MAC acquisitions advisory committee is expected to meet in June to quickly funnel much-needed funds to working artists.
