Mother arrested after daughter, 11, fatally stabbed
Homicide investigators are waiting to question a 34-year-old woman after her two daughters were stabbed, one fatally, Saturday night.
An 11-year-old girl died after being hospitalized with stab wounds. Her five-year-old sister is in stable condition.
Their mother was arrested and hospitalized for self-inflicted wounds to her upper body. She was in stable condition on Sunday night and will be interviewed by police, said Constable Julien Lévesque.
The stabbings happened inside an apartment complex on Rousselot St. in the Villeray district.
The girls’ distraught father called 911 while standing on the sidewalk. A neighbour, who overheard him describe what had happened, rushed into the apartment and tried to resuscitate one of the injured girls, according to TVA.
The girl was lying on the floor in the living room and the mother remained in the hallway while the neighbour attended to her injured daughter, TVA reported.
The neighbour said she doesn’t remember whether she tried to help the older girl or her younger sister. “My brain is blocked,” she said. “It’s very difficult.”
Neighbours say the couple was separated and the father had lived in the housing co-op for about two years.
Antoine Ortuso, a supervisor with Urgences-santé, recounted a tragic scene for paramedics. He said four people were transported to a hospital, but couldn’t say if it was the father of the girls who neighbours reported seeing outside in shock.
Urgences-santé staff was also in shock, Ortuso said.
“These are the types of calls that leave traces for the rest of a career,” he said.
